Samsung Electronics and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, or ETRI demonstrated world first wibro evolution
Korea’s leading electronics maker and the central government-financed research institute succeeded in demonstrating the newest and fastest version of wireless mobile Internet technology. Now, people can use faster high-speed Internet on their mobile phones and other digital devices.
Due to the new technology’s enhanced data transmission speed, Korea is expected to gain an edge over European rivals.
Industry officials are currently competing to make their own wireless mobile Internet technology the global standard to be used for fourth-generation mobile phones.
Samsung Electronics and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, or ETRI, released a joint statement yesterday, saying that they demonstrated Mobile WiMAX Evolution at the JW Marriott Hotel, Banpo-dong, southern Seoul yesterday in the presence of members of the Radiocommunication Sector, a division of the International Telecommunication Union.
The ITU is an international organization specializing in deciding standards regarding radio and telecommunications. ITU members gathered in Seoul to discuss an IMT-Advanced standard that would be used for 4G mobile phones.
IMT-Advanced is the official name of the 4G wireless mobile Internet technology.
During the Seoul meeting, Samsung and ETRI proved the effectiveness of Mobile WiMAX Evolution. For example, a single 4MB MP3 file is downloaded onto a mobile phone in 0.2 seconds, and a full-length 700MB film is downloadable in 37 seconds on moving buses or subways.
With the new technology, mobile phone users can get faster access to mobile Internet at comparable speeds to Web surfing on a home computer.
Compared to the high-speed downlink packet access technology adopted by current third-generation mobile phones, WiMAX Evolution is 10 times faster.
WiMAX is currently available in the United States and some selected Asian nations including Korea. Meanwhile, WiMAX’s counterpart Long Term Evolution, or LTE, has been adopted by many European countries. Including WiMAX and LTE, many other technologies are competing to be chosen as the global standard because ITU will make a final decision over what technology it will choose in 2011.
