Yota reaches 100,000 WiMAX subscribers

Russian WiMAX specialist Yota has announced that since its commercial launch it has added 60,000 net new subscribers to its wireless internet services, giving it a total of 100,000 active subscribers, including customers that bought into the service during its test phase. The company launched its services in Moscow and St Petersburg on 1 June and has since opened a test network in the southern city of Ufa; the trial is scheduled to end on 30 September. The company claims that in July the average traffic per customer was equivalent to 10.3GB, reportedly the same as most fixed line broadband customers in Moscow. ‘The milestone of 100,000 active users was exceeded by Yota within just two and a half months of the launch of commercial operations’, said Yota sales director Igor Torgov, ‘We would like to thank our clients for believing in the new technology and supporting us. In the beginning of autumn new Yota access devices will appear on the market. Thus, in September, under the agreement with Intel and some laptop producers, new laptop models with built-in Mobile WiMAX modules will be supplied to the Russian market through six vendors.’ The company also plans to launch its portable router, the ‘Yota Egg’, to the market in the second half of September.

Qualcomm Takes Lead as 4G Patent Holder

Qualcomm looks set to be the leading patent holder in 4G wireless communications after recording 24% of ETSI declarations surrounding LTE, as well as 16% of the 26,000 patents that have potential relevance to 4G technologies generally, including WiMAX. Other notable players in the LTE field include Interdigital (18%), Huawei (10%), LG (9%), Nokia (9%) and Samsung (7%). When considering the whole 4G environment Samsung takes second spot with 12% of all patent filings, and Nokia takes third with 6%. Stuart Carlaw, chief research officer at ABI Research, comments, “Innovation in this space continues unabated. Given that these declarations reflect work completed 18 months ago, it is very feasible that this landscape could shift again during the coming two years as we see the 4G market ramp up.” He goes on to add that, “We see no major reason why the licensing situation in 4G will be significantly different from that for 3G. There is still a big list of ‘haves’ but also a large list of ‘...
