Driver for 4G is video predicts UMTS forum

Currently general internet services and applications such as email, information searching and general online browsing are the top of the user’s preference surpassing all other services by a significant amount. With introduction of mobile broadband technologies such as LTE , email, information searching and general online browsing are expected to stay at the top of the list. The major changes occur in the media group and users expect to make greater use of all media related services with online betting/gambling generate little interests.

Expected growth of the major services like Mobile TV( which will primarily be internet delivered over the top streaming services rather than broadcast or multicast TV), Video call and video download have the highest growth rates . As noted earlier the type of video media accessed has implications for the broadcast industry, as internet –based TV and user generated content has the ability to reduce advertising incomes. Online shopping and mobile , blogging are among the highest growers . The trend again indicates that users are expecting more media related services on high speed mobile broadband and considering mobile broadband services as part of their everyday life extension of their current fixed internet.

Future Applications & Services

1) Real time/ interactive services: Network storage will become a commodity; social networking and mobile gaming will become more popular.

2) Location based services will raise the possibility of new business models that can alleviate the ARPU decline.

3) Video services will enjoy the greatest benefits from LTE, but faces competition from Wi-Fi access, which in turn will also influence the operator strategy for inbuilding
and hot-spot femtocell deployment.

4) Voice will remain the leading revenue generator for some time – but solutions for the handling voice services over LTE are under consideration and in trial and will depend on operators’ strategies to retain and protect current voice revenues.

Other notable players in the LTE field include Interdigital (18%), Huawei (10%), LG (9%), Nokia (9%) and Samsung (7%). When considering the whole 4G environment Samsung takes second spot with 12% of all patent filings, and Nokia takes third with 6%. Stuart Carlaw, chief research officer at ABI Research, comments, “Innovation in this space continues unabated. Given that these declarations reflect work completed 18 months ago, it is very feasible that this landscape could shift again during the coming two years as we see the 4G market ramp up.” He goes on to add that, “We see no major reason why the licensing situation in 4G will be significantly different from that for 3G. There is still a big list of ‘haves’ but also a large list of ‘...
