Iran’s first nationwide mobile broadband network

Datak Telecom to introduce Iran’s first Mobile WiMAX Wave2 service with Samsung WiMAX solutions Seoul, Korea, September 13, 2009: Datak Telecom, one of the largest Broadband Internet Service Providers in Iran, has selected Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading provider of telecom systems and mobile phones, as its sole WiMAX equipment vendor to bring
the first WiMAX Wave2 service to Iran.

The Installation and deployment of Samsung’s WiMAX network equipment will begin in Tehran this month and the first commercial Mobile WiMAX service will be introduced in the second quarter of 2010. Samsung is providing a full range of Mobile WiMAX solutions,including base stations, access service network gateways, and all the related equipment and services

Datak Telecom is the Internet subsidiary of Social Security Investment Company which is Iran’s largest Investment house. It is the leading local operators providing broadband internet services such as ADSL, IP-Wireless for business and residential users in Tehran. The company is currently the only WiMAX operator in Iran with the latest Mobile WiMAX technology. Datak Telecom plans to gradually extend its WiMAX services to cover all of Greater Tehran with various customer-centric services such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), video and location-based-service and more.
Samsung provides its market-proven equipment to 25 Mobile WiMAX operators in 21 countries. Currently, Samsung is focusing on accelerating Mobile WiMAX business in Middle East. Mobily, the largest 3.75G mobile operator and wireless broadband provider in the Middle East and North Africa, also selected Samsung as its prime equipment vendor. Mobile WiMAX is the only available technology welcomed by most service providers across the industry, from legacy fixed-line telecom operators and wireless service operators, to broadcasting, cable and internet service providers. The WiMAX Forum has recorded 484 WiMAX Deployments in 141 countries and forecasts that there will be more than 133 million subscribers with commercial service by 2012.

Qualcomm Takes Lead as 4G Patent Holder

Qualcomm looks set to be the leading patent holder in 4G wireless communications after recording 24% of ETSI declarations surrounding LTE, as well as 16% of the 26,000 patents that have potential relevance to 4G technologies generally, including WiMAX. Other notable players in the LTE field include Interdigital (18%), Huawei (10%), LG (9%), Nokia (9%) and Samsung (7%). When considering the whole 4G environment Samsung takes second spot with 12% of all patent filings, and Nokia takes third with 6%. Stuart Carlaw, chief research officer at ABI Research, comments, “Innovation in this space continues unabated. Given that these declarations reflect work completed 18 months ago, it is very feasible that this landscape could shift again during the coming two years as we see the 4G market ramp up.” He goes on to add that, “We see no major reason why the licensing situation in 4G will be significantly different from that for 3G.
