Huwaei to deploy WIMAX in Seattle, California & Honolulu for clearwire 4G network

US-based WiMAX specialist Clearwire has announced that it has contracted Chinese equipment supplier Huawei Technologies to provide wireless radio access network infrastructure for its planned nationwide WiMAX rollout.

Huawei will provide several key infrastructure pieces, including base stations, element management system (EMS) components, and related network hardware and software. Huawei’s is contracted to supply roughly 2000 base station for 3 US market i.e Seattle, California & Honolulu.
As per industry insiders Huawei will supply first 4X4 MIMO based systems to clearwire. Highlights of this particular contract are;

1. Huawei will supply approximately 2000 Base Station with 4x4 Mimo configurations. ( DBS 3900 series)
2. Huawei also has the roadmap to upgrade these base stations to a profile called MIMO+BF. ( improves coverage & capacity)
3. First time we will see third party integration of ASN-GW which means compliance to open R6 interface.
4. Wichorus will provide ANS-GW for this network. This is significant development due to the fact that it will enable other operators to choose any RAN with independent Packet Gateways leading to more open ecosystem & positive scale of economy.

Huwaei is also very active in LTE development. For, Teliasoner they will deploy network in Oslo, Norway. From technology point of view Clearwire Base stations has 4G silicon’s. There is a high possibility of migration to LTE & 16m with minimal hardware changes. In that way Clear wire has kept their options open about future migration paths.

If you recall the entire suppliers to clearwire also has development in LTE/16m. Motorola , Huawei & Samsung has the capability to migrate to LTE or 16m since these companies are actively participating in development of standards.

Thanks,BP

Qualcomm Takes Lead as 4G Patent Holder

Qualcomm looks set to be the leading patent holder in 4G wireless communications after recording 24% of ETSI declarations surrounding LTE, as well as 16% of the 26,000 patents that have potential relevance to 4G technologies generally, including WiMAX. Other notable players in the LTE field include Interdigital (18%), Huawei (10%), LG (9%), Nokia (9%) and Samsung (7%). When considering the whole 4G environment Samsung takes second spot with 12% of all patent filings, and Nokia takes third with 6%. Stuart Carlaw, chief research officer at ABI Research, comments, “Innovation in this space continues unabated. Given that these declarations reflect work completed 18 months ago, it is very feasible that this landscape could shift again during the coming two years as we see the 4G market ramp up.” He goes on to add that, “We see no major reason why the licensing situation in 4G will be significantly different from that for 3G. There is still a big list of ‘haves’ but also a large list of ‘...
